The Merseyside Police Training Academy had been located at Allerton Police Station - a beautiful old building in a prime development location. Following the Force’s decision to update and modernise their portfolio of ageing buildings, the sale of the current plot required the training centre to re-locate to the nearby Mather Avenue facility. In addition to re-homing the training academy, the new site would be accommodating the ICT suite, canine training centre, equestrian centre, gym, offices and conference facilities spread across nine buildings on the estate. As the team was temporarily housed, the refurbishment of the Mather Avenue location had to be completed within 20 weeks, leaving no room for error.
The scope requirements of this project were extensive and included the installation of multiple systems; above ground drainage, rainwater, domestic water services, LTHW heating, natural gas, ventilation, A/C and thermal insulation. Energy efficiency and ensuring a safe and comfortable environment was delivered through the BMS/automatic controls fitted. From a security perspective; dry risers, smoke ventilation and fire alarm systems were part of the detailed refurbishment. LV distribution and switchgear, general power and lighting schemes along with a UPS completed the scope. An interesting feature of the project was the requirement for a horse solarium and horse shower!
It was crucial that Quartzelec ensured all stakeholders were aware of their roles and responsbilities to minimise delays and to overcome the challenges of working within a live environment. This level of communication we believe contributed to the minimal number of defects reported throughout the 12-month warranty period and our processes have now been adopted by our delivery team on all subsequent projects.
